1. Hook Lighthouse
We begin the day at Hook Lighthouse, the oldest operational lighthouse in the world. Standing proudly on the Hook Peninsula, it has guided sailors for more than 800 years. You can climb the winding stairs to the lantern room for sweeping views of the Irish Sea, or simply walk along the headland to watch waves crash against the cliffs.
The surrounding coastline is wild and beautiful, with seals often seen resting on the rocks below. It is a reminder of how closely Ireland’s story has always been tied to the sea.
2. Tintern Abbey
A short drive inland brings us to Tintern Abbey, founded in the 13th century by Cistercian monks. Its towering stone walls and quiet grounds invite a slower pace. A gentle walk through the adjoining woodland trails reveals old bridges, walled gardens, and streams that seem to carry the sound of history itself.
It is one of those places where time feels elastic — long gone, yet somehow still present.
3. Johnstown Castle and Gardens
Next, we visit Johnstown Castle, a Gothic Revival masterpiece surrounded by lakes and gardens. The castle itself looks like something from a storybook, and the nearby Irish Agricultural Museum provides an engaging look at how rural life in Ireland has changed through the centuries.
Walking the lakeside paths here is a peaceful way to enjoy the grounds and spot swans gliding across the water.
