Tour Description
Journey through time with our private and customized tour of Meath and Newgrange. Prepare to be awestruck as we take you to some of Ireland's most extraordinary and historic sites, including Newgrange, Knowth Passage Tombs, Mellifont Abbey, Monasterboice, and the Hill of Slane.
First stop, Newgrange, a UNESCO World Heritage site that predates both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. This remarkable passage tomb is renowned for its captivating winter solstice phenomena, where a single ray of sunlight perfectly illuminates the inner chamber. It's an experience that will leave you spellbound.
Next, explore Knowth, a megalithic passage tomb built in the same era as Newgrange. Its intricate astronomical alignment during the equinoxes in March and September will leave you in awe. With two passages leading to separate burial chambers and surrounded by smaller cairns, Knowth boasts a wealth of Megalithic art, including engravings in spiral form and even the oldest known illustration of the moon.
We'll then take you to Mellifont Abbey, a National Monument of Ireland founded by Cistercian Monks in 1142. This serene abbey served as William of Orange's headquarters during the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, adding a layer of historical significance.
Prepare to be enchanted by Monasterboice, home to the remains of an early Christian monastic settlement established in the 5th century. Marvel at the towering 28-meter round tower and three magnificent high crosses, with one considered the finest example in all of Ireland. The artistry and craftsmanship of these ancient structures are simply breathtaking.
Lastly, we'll ascend the Hill of Slane, which offers sweeping views of the countryside and stretches as far as the Irish Sea. Discover the significance of this hill, where Saint Patrick famously lit the paschal fire, challenging the pagan High King and bringing Christianity to Ireland. It's a place steeped in history and spirituality.
Your journey begins at Brú na Boínne Visitor Centre, where you'll be transported to both Newgrange and Knowth via a shuttle bus. Please note that pre-booking online is essential, as walk-in tickets are not available. Remember to bring your face covering, as it is mandatory during your visit.
The tour will last approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, allowing you ample time to explore the rest of Meath. After the passage tombs tour, our team at Custom Irish Tours will be waiting to whisk you away in comfort to the picturesque ruins of Mellifont Abbey. From there, we'll guide you through the fascinating site of Monasterboice before concluding our day on the summit of the Hill of Slane, surrounded by breathtaking vistas.
As part of our service, we are delighted to recommend a delightful lunch spot along the way. Please note that admission fees and meals are not included in the tour prices.
