I will collect you directly from your chosen location in Dublin at a time that suits you. Before we set off, we will run through the plan for the day, with full flexibility to adjust the route based on your interests. This is a completely private tour, so the day moves at your pace.
Clonmacnoise Monastic Site
Our first major stop is Clonmacnoise, one of Ireland’s most significant early monastic sites. Founded in the 6th century by St. Ciarán, it features high crosses, a cathedral, round towers, ancient ruins, and panoramic views over the River Shannon. It is a peaceful, atmospheric place that captures Ireland’s spiritual and early Christian heritage.
Sean’s Bar – Ireland’s Oldest Pub
In the heart of Athlone, we stop at Sean’s Bar, widely believed to be the oldest pub in Ireland (and possibly the world), dating back to 900 AD. Enjoy the charm of this historic landmark, hear its stories, and take in the cosy, traditional atmosphere.
Athlone Castle (Optional)
Overlooking the River Shannon, Athlone Castle is a beautifully restored Norman fortress with interactive exhibits and superb views of the town and river. This stop can be included based on your preference.
Scenic Drive Along Lough Ree
We continue our journey along the tranquil shores of Lough Ree, with opportunities for scenic photography, short walks, and lakeside viewpoints. The Hidden Heartlands boast some of the most peaceful and picturesque stretches of water in Ireland.
Belvedere House, Gardens & The Jealous Wall (Optional)
This 18th-century lakeside estate includes sweeping parklands, ornamental gardens, and the famous Jealous Wall, Ireland’s largest folly. It’s a fantastic stop for anyone who enjoys gardens, architecture, and dramatic history.
Optional Add-On: Leap Castle – Ireland’s Most Haunted Castle
For guests who enjoy folklore, supernatural tales, or historic mysteries, we can include a visit to Leap Castle, often described as Ireland’s most haunted castle. Meet the owners, explore its ancient chambers, and hear stories of clan battles, secret tunnels, and the castle’s legendary spirits. This is a unique and memorable experience for those who want something different.
Lunch & Local Food Options
Throughout the day, we will stop in one of the region’s welcoming towns for lunch. Options include traditional Irish pubs, riverside restaurants, or cosy cafés serving local produce. I can tailor suggestions to your taste.
Return to Dublin
After exploring the best of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, we make our relaxed journey back to Dublin. We can add additional stops if time allows before returning to your accommodation.
