Meath and Newgrange Tour
Join us on this enjoyable day tour to some of the most beautiful sites in historic County Meath. Our first stop is Newgrange, one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. A passage tomb in the Brú na Bóinne complex, Newgrange was designed specifically for the Winter Solstice and you get to experience a recreation of this during your visit.
Next stop is Monasterboice, an early Christian settlement. Walk amongst the old tombstones, through the historic ruins of two churches and see the spectacular high crosses all under the guard of the 35 metre high roundtower.
We then continue on to the quaint village of Slane, where on the Hill of Slane you can visit the ruins of Slane Abbey, a 15th century friary church and college. Here you will see the imposing remains of a 19 metre high early gothic tower while taking in the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.
The Hill of Tara is our next stop. A magical and mythical site once home to Ireland’s High Kings. Visit the Fort of Kings, an Iron Age Royal Enclosure that houses two interlinked earthworks, Cormac’s House & the Royal Seat. View the Lia Faíl (Stone of Destiny), the inauguration stone of the Kings of Tara and feel the sense of history in the atmosphere.
From here we travel on to Bective Abbey. This monastery was founded in 1147 by Murchadh O’Molghin, King of Meath. Contemplate and reflect while walking through the peaceful surroundings. Enjoy the beautiful stone arches and marvel at the persevering craftsmanship.
Our final stop of the tour is Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Dating from the 12th century, it was used as a primary shooting location for the film “Braveheart”. On the guided tour, you will learn its secrets and hear how this medieval castle survived its own history.
