We Create Stunning Custom Tours of Ireland
Welcome to Custom Irish Tours
Private driver guided tours across Ireland, crafted with care, experience and genuine local insight
Hello, I’m Derek Smith, and I would love to show you my Ireland.I grew up in County Meath, often called the Royal County, the ancient heart of Ireland where high kings ruled and centuries of history shaped the landscape. From a young age I was fascinated by the stories behind the hills, castles and sacred sites that surrounded me. That early curiosity never faded, it simply grew into a lifelong passion.
Before guiding, I spent many years as a professional driver, from local taxi work to executive chauffeuring. Eventually I realised I could bring my two worlds together, blending my love of Ireland’s history and mythology with the comfort, safety and personal service of a private driver. That is how Custom Irish Tours was born.
When you travel with me, you are not joining a bus tour or following a rehearsed script. Every tour is personal and completely tailored. You travel in comfort, with good conversation, flexibility and the kind of local knowledge that comes from growing up among the very landscapes we explore together.
If you are interested in discovering Ireland your way, at your pace, with a guide who genuinely loves what he does, you are in the right place.
What to Expect on a Custom Irish Tour

My tours are personal by design
Every guest is different, so no two journeys are ever the same. I don’t rush, and I don’t herd. We travel at your pace, stopping when the view, the story, or the moment deserves it. Along the way, you’ll hear tales of saints, scholars, and rogues; myths that shaped the land; and the small truths you only learn from a local who has spent decades on these roads.
Whether it’s a quiet walk around Glendalough, standing before the passage tombs of Newgrange, or feeling the Atlantic wind on the cliffs of Moher, I’ll make sure you see Ireland’s beauty — and feel its spirit.

Who Travels with me
My guests come from all over the world, newlyweds on their first adventure, families tracing ancestral roots, and retirees finally ticking Ireland off their list. Many arrive from Canada or America; all leave as friends.
They tell me they love the easy pace, the laughter, and the stories that stay with them long after the trip ends. It’s not unusual for guests to say they wish they’d booked more days, and often, they return to do just that.
Award Winning Service
My Tours are highly rated on TripAdvisor and Google Reviews and have received multiple industry awards though what matters most to me is the smile at the end of each day.
Tailored itineraries
Choose one of my curated routes, or let’s design something completely bespoke.
Local Expertise
I know the roads, the rhythms, and the quiet places that never make the guidebooks.
Unscripted Moments
Some of the best memories happen by chance — a rainbow over a stone fort, a chat with a local farmer, or a quiet cup of tea in a tiny café. My tours leave room for those moments.
Comfortable Private Transport
Spacious vehicles, bottled water, and full flexibility.
Personal Planning
I plan every itinerary myself and guide the majority of tours. When demand is high, I partner with a select group of experienced driver-guides who share the same values, personality, and attention to detail.

Hurling Experience in Kilkenny
Hurling isn’t just a sport in Ireland – it’s a living tradition woven into community, heritage, and identity. In Kilkenny, the spiritual home of the game, you’ll gain a genuine insight into why hurling inspires such pride and passion.
Your experience begins inside a real team dressing room, where generations of local legends once prepared for action. Here, you’ll learn the origins of the sport, its evolution, and the deep cultural significance it still holds today.
With the history in your pocket, you’ll take to the pitch for a hands-on session. Under expert guidance, try your swing with the hurley, test your accuracy with sliotars, and take a shot at the iconic goalposts—just as the famed Kilkenny Cats do.
Depending on your chosen location, you’ll either explore medieval Kilkenny City or enjoy the warmth of a traditional rural pub in Freshford before heading to the field. Both offer an authentic glimpse of Irish life, each with its own charm and character.
Whether you’re a lifelong sports enthusiast or simply curious about Irish culture, this experience is a standout addition to any tour. Guests from all over the world have left with a newfound love for the game—some even planning to join a GAA club once they return home.
An Gobha Iron Works – Iron Age Blacksmithing Experience
Hidden in the historical landscape of County Meath, An Gobha Iron Works offers a rare opportunity to travel back to Ireland’s Iron Age. This isn’t a museum or a static exhibit – it’s a living, breathing encounter with the past, led by the charismatic An Gobha, a performer and master craftsman who embodies the blacksmiths of old.
Your visit begins with immersive theatre, where An Gobha brings the era to life through humour, energy, and vivid storytelling. You’ll learn why metalwork was essential to daily life in ancient Ireland and watch demonstrations of traditional forging techniques once used to craft tools, weapons, and ceremonial pieces.
Folklore and mythology are woven throughout the experience. From legendary heroes to mystical beings, An Gobha shares the tales that shaped Iron Age beliefs, offering a deeper understanding of the people who lived along the Boyne Valley thousands of years ago.
Then, it’s your turn. Under expert guidance, you’ll step up to the forge, work the bellows, feel the heat of the fire, and shape metal using authentic tools. This hands-on session gives you a true appreciation for the skill and physicality of ancient craftsmanship.
Some experiences also include a taste of history, with dishes inspired by Iron Age cooking traditions, bringing another layer of authenticity to your visit.
Engaging, educational, and great fun for all ages, An Gobha Iron Works is an unforgettable way to explore Ireland’s past. It’s a brilliant addition to any itinerary through Meath or the Boyne Valley and a highlight for travellers who enjoy culture, heritage, and unique interactive experiences.
Kayaking Adventure on Ireland’s Scenic Waterways
A kayaking experience in Ireland is one of the most rewarding ways to connect with the landscape. Whether you’re gliding across a tranquil lake, drifting along a winding river, or exploring sheltered coastal bays, this adventure offers a fresh perspective on Ireland’s natural beauty.
Suitable for beginners and seasoned paddlers alike, your experience begins with a short introduction to paddling techniques, safety basics, and equipment. Once on the water, you’ll move at an easy, comfortable pace, with time to take in the surrounding views and enjoy the stillness of nature.
Depending on location and conditions, you may encounter local wildlife, hidden coves, ancient ruins along the shoreline, or sweeping mountain vistas reflected on the water’s surface. Guides share stories about the region’s history, geology, and folklore, adding depth to your journey.
Kayaking is peaceful, immersive, and surprisingly relaxing. It’s a superb choice for guests who want an active outdoor experience without strenuous hiking or climbing, and it pairs beautifully with many of our tours across Ireland’s lakes, rivers, and coastal regions.
Gaelic Games Experience with Croke Park Skyline & GAA Museum
The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) is woven into the fabric of Irish life. This combined experience offers the perfect blend of grassroots authenticity and national prestige, giving you a complete introduction to Ireland’s most cherished sports—hurling and Gaelic football—across two distinct and equally memorable settings.
Your day begins at a community GAA pitch, where local coaches introduce you to the history, culture, and passion behind Gaelic games. This is where the GAA truly lives—on local fields where generations have trained, played, and built lifelong traditions.
You’ll learn the fundamentals of both major Gaelic sports: hurling and Gaelic football. Under friendly guidance, you’ll try striking, lifting and shooting with the hurley and sliotar, and practise soloing, passing and scoring in Gaelic football. The focus is always on fun, participation, and experiencing the spirit of the games rather than competition.
After your hands-on session, continue your journey to Croke Park, the legendary headquarters of the GAA and one of Europe’s largest stadiums. Walk through the players’ tunnel, visit the dressing rooms, and stand pitch-side where the All-Ireland Final takes place each September, as guides share stories of iconic matches and moments.
In the GAA Museum, explore interactive exhibits, historic jerseys, championship trophies and the stories of the legends who shaped the sport. Your experience concludes with the Skyline Tour, an open-air walkway high above the stadium offering panoramic views over Dublin and the surrounding coastline.
Combining grassroots tradition with national pride, this experience beautifully showcases how the GAA shapes communities from small villages to the capital’s greatest arena. It’s an inspiring, active, and deeply Irish addition to any tour.
Spin Me a Yarn at Boyne Valley Wools
Boyne Valley Wools is set on Alison’s working sheep farm near Donore, County Meath. It’s a place I’ve come to know well over the years, and one I always look forward to returning to. The setting is peaceful, authentic, and unmistakably Irish—fields of grazing sheep, historic farm buildings, and panoramic views of the Newgrange monument rising above the valley.
Alison isn’t just talented, she’s genuinely one of the warmest people you’ll meet. Her award-winning Jacob sheep are her pride and joy, and she loves introducing guests to the flock. After countless visits, I can tell you: no two sessions are ever the same, and every guest leaves talking about how much they enjoyed meeting her animals.
Inside her cosy craft studio, Alison walks you through the entire woolcraft process. With her spinning wheel at centre stage, she demonstrates how the fleece is prepared, carded, and hand-spun into beautiful natural yarn, before being turned into woven, knitted or felted pieces.
One of the most charming parts of the experience is the hands-on craft session. Using wool from her own flock, you’ll make a small felted sheep to take home. It’s simple, fun, and suits guests of all ages. I’ve seen families, solo travellers, and even non-crafty guests fall in love with this activity.
Before you leave, take a moment to browse Alison’s small but beautifully curated studio shop. She stocks her own hand-spun yarn, woven pieces, felted artwork, and a range of crafts from talented local makers. Guests often pick up unique souvenirs here—items with real provenance and a story behind them.
This experience fits perfectly into a Boyne Valley itinerary. It brings balance to the day—after exploring UNESCO heritage sites and ancient tombs, guests really appreciate the personal, hands-on, and intimate nature of this farm visit. Having brought groups here for years, I can confidently say that Alison’s workshop is one of the most memorable stops on any tour.
